Dead Phoenix Society has existed in spirit long before there was a guild name or a formal body of players grouped together in a game.
Our members have played MMOs for many years, the earliest being Ultima Online. Over time we met in real life through work or mutual acquaintances. It all came together in 2001 with a game called Anarchy Online. We still had not formed into an official guild yet but AO was the genesis of our play together. We tried other games and joined other guilds but the core group of us that would eventually form DPS remained intact over the years.
In 2004 as World of Warcraft was passing through its beta testing phase and nearing completion we felt that this game would be a keeper and that it might finally be time to start a guild and have a virtual home of our own.
We deliberated and settled on the name Dead Phoenix Society?. It's a word play on the title of the film Dead Poets Society and also a humorous oxymoron relating to the impossibility of a dead phoenix.
Almost all of our members know at least one other person in the guild in real life. We communicate on a daily basis both in and out of game. Because of this we have an incredibly strong core that is very unlikely to ever dissolve.
We look forward to continued adventures in the fantastic worlds Blizzard or other companies create for us to play in.
